Vol. 74 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplies of Linseed Cake.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that no supplies of linseed cake are available; and whether he proposes to take any steps to remedy this situation.

I am aware that there is a considerable demand at present for linseed cake, and I understand that the home output for the next couple of months has already been purchased by distributors. Licences for the importation of linseed cake have been issued to the full extent asked for by regular importers in recent months. Owing, however, to the high prices which have prevailed for this commodity, it is possible that some exporters have not secured sufficient stocks and that there may be temporary local shortages. In view of arrangements being made by importers for further supplies, I do not consider that any special steps by me are necessary.

Does that answer suggest that there are adequate supplies? All I can tell the Minister is that I cannot get any oil cake, and I have been notified by the Minister's concessionaire that I will not get any for three weeks. Is there any place in Ireland in which those whose business it is to supply the farmers of this country can get supplies?

All that answer suggests is that the importers are free to bring it in if they are prepared to pay for it.

Will the Minister give me a licence?

Regular importers, I should have said.

From whom can I get it?

The Deputy ought to know more about the trade than I do.

I do. All I know about it is that you have made a mess of it. I want to know if you will clear it up?

I cannot make the Deputy's business go.

Would the Minister give us any indication as to where we can get oil cake?

From a regular importer.

We cannot, and if they are telling you that they are pulling your leg, as they frequently do.

They are pulling your leg.
