Vol. 74 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - British Quota for Live Pigs.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he has received any representations as to the desirability of securing an increased quota for live pigs in the British market; whether he is aware that the British Department of Agriculture is prepared to give Éire an enlarged quota; and whether he proposes to take steps to secure this additional outlet for the output of our pig producers.

The answer to each part of the Deputy's question is in the affirmative. Arrangements have been made for an increase in the number of live pigs which may be exported during the current calendar year, for factory purposes, under the British bacon quota. There is no restriction on the export of live pigs which are destined for other purposes.

Am I to understand that as soon as the increased quota for bacon pigs is secured it will be distributed to all those who were normally engaged in the export trade prior to the imposition of the restriction?
