Vol. 74 No. 9

Conditions on Tory Island.

Before the Tánaiste deals with the order of business, may I be allowed to inquire whether the Government has taken, or intends to take, steps to deal with the emergency which, we are led to believe, exists on Tory Island, off Donegal? It would be a matter, I think, of considerable relief to everyone, if the Minister could either say that the emergency is not as grave as reported, or else that he has instructed somebody to take appropriate measures to protect the people from the danger of starvation.

The Deputy should have given the Chair notice of his intention to put a private notice question.

I beg the Chair's pardon. I was not aware of the procedure.

As the Ceann Comhairle has stated, it is usual when such questions are raised to give private notice. Let me assure the Deputy and the House that everything that it was possible for the Government to do has been done, and is being done.

Good. Has relief been sent?

Everything possible to get relief there has been done.
