Vol. 74 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Women Teachers.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state whether the recently introduced rule whereby women teachers are compelled to retire at the age of 60, applies equally to members of religious communities.

The rule to which the Deputy refers applies to all women teachers, lay or religious, who are serving in a pensionable capacity under the National Teachers' Superannuation Scheme, 1934. It accordingly applies to members of religious communities who are paid personal salaries out of State funds in classification convent national schools. It does not apply to a nun who is serving in a convent national school paid on a capitation basis as she is not paid a personal salary and her service is not pensionable. Each such case is considered on its merits.
