asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state the number of telephone subscribers connected to (a) automatic and (b) manual exchanges on the 1st January, 1938.

Particulars of the subdivision of subscribers as between automatic and manual exchanges are not readily available. The total number of subscribers' telephones on the 1st January, 1938, was 40,388, comprising 20,011 automatic and 20,377 manual.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state the number of telephone subscribers on the 1st January, 1925, and 1st January, 1938, indicating the number of subscribers who rented more than one line on the dates stated.

The total number of telephone subscribers on the 1st January, 1925, was 12,785, and the total number of exchange lines 13,317. The total number of telephone subscribers on the 1st January, 1938, was 22,998 and the total number of exchange lines 24,467. Particulars of the number of subscribers who rented more than one line on these dates are not readily available.

Could the Minister say how many separate lines the exchange lines control?

I do not think it would be possible to say. As the Deputy knows, some subscribers have many more exchange lines than others.

Could the Minister not give an average figure?

I have no average figure.
