Vol. 74 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Gaeltacht Tweeds.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what is the average price paid per yard, for handwoven tweeds in the Gaeltacht to workers who are supplied with yarn; and also where the yarn is spun that is supplied to Gaeltacht workers.

The price paid to weavers working for the Department is based on the number of picks per inch, varying from 4d. to 6d. per yard. The average price for the last calendar year was 4.8 pence per yard. The yarn supplied to workers is, as far as practicable, spun in Eire, but as there is no spinning firm in the country not itself engaged in the process of weaving, it is necessary to obtain certain supplies from outside the country.
