Vol. 74 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishermen and Unemployment Assistance.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that a considerable amount of misunderstanding prevails among fishermen, particularly those working on share ownership, as to their rights under the Unemployment Assistance Acts; and, if so, whether he will arrange for his Department to have a notice circulated at the fishing ports explaining in simple language the position of the fishermen under the Acts.

I explained the position of fishermen under the Unemployment Assistance Acts in the Dáil on the 30th April, 1936, and in response to enquiries the position has also been explained by my Department to the Association of Municipal Authorities, to local authorities and to individuals who were interested in the question. As, however, the Deputy thinks there is still some misunderstanding amongst fishermen as to their position, I shall arrange to have explanatory leaflets prepared and made available for distribution, as suggested in the question.
