Vol. 74 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Animal Feeding Stuffs.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that the development of pig feeding and cattle rearing is largely dependent on a cheap supply of concentrated feeding stuffs; and if he will arrange for the importation of oil cakes and animal feeding stuffs free of tax or licence so that they may be available to the farmers of this country at something like their commercial value in Great Britain.

I am aware of the importance to stock-feeders of having supplies of oil seed cakes and other animal feeding stuffs available at the lowest possible prices. Such foodstuffs are not at present subject to duty on importation, but, in view of the various considerations involved, I cannot undertake to remove all licensing restrictions.

I am sure the Minister is aware that there was a very popular calf meal known as Bibby's cream equivalent and that since the unfortunate economic war started, we cannot get that calf meal in here. I am sure the Minister is aware that that calf meal was second to none in producing good stock. I should be very thankful if he provided some means by which we could get in that calf meal because it is really necessary for the successful feeding of young stock.

I am afraid I cannot endorse the good qualities that the Deputy has given to this particular calf meal.

Well, from experience I can. I am a man who rears about 20 calves each year and the calves fetch about £3 per head less now than when I was giving them that calf meal.

£3 per head less?

Is the Minister aware that this particular calf meal is a very popular feeding stuff, not alone in Wexford, but in several other counties?

They can afford to spend a great deal of money on advertising.

Yes, just as the Minister spent on the advertising of wheat.
