Vol. 75 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - War Risk Insurance.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the present scale rate for war risk insurance is applicable to all Irish ports; and, if so, if he will make representations to have the pool rate insurances extended to this country, as the present rates are tending to increase the cost of all commodities.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether his attention has been directed to the difficulties that arise in connection with timber imports and the marine insurance for war risks in view of the fact that our importers cannot avail of the insurance arrangements provided by the British Government; and, if so, if any steps are being taken in the matter.

I will take questions Nos. 2 and 3 together. Representations have been made to my Department as to the present position concerning war risk insurance on timber and other cargoes for this country and the matter is at present receiving active consideration.

Is the Minister aware that we are paying seven times the rates that importers in Northern Ireland are paying and that it is a matter of urgency?

I am aware of that.

Has the Minister's mind been directed to the special difficulty in connection with the direct shipment of timber and the possibility that it might be impossible for us to get a supply of timber unless the Government take some steps to meet the situation?
