Vol. 75 No. 20

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imported Sugar.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total amount of sugar in cwts. imported into the country for the year ended 31st March, 1939; what was the c.i.f. price per cwt.; and what was the total amount of customs duty levied on same.

The total amount of sugar imported was 1,114,313 cwt. The c.i.f. value per cwt. was 7s. 11d. It is not possible to state the total amount of customs duty levied on the sugar imported during the year ended 31st March, 1939, because part of the sugar in question was warehoused and duty may not yet have been levied on all of such sugar.

The imported sugar charged with duty during the year ended 31st March. 1939, includes some sugar warehoused in the previous year and does not include some sugar warehoused in the year ended 31st March, 1939.

The net receipt of duty from imported sugar retained for home consumption in the year ended 31st March, 1939, was £882,786 9s. 10d., the corresponding net quantity being 1,110,753 cwts.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, can he say to what extent the imports for the year ended 31st March, 1939, were in excess of those for previous years?

I would require notice of that question.
