Vol. 76 No. 1

Written Answers. - Value of Bacon, Hams and Gammons.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total quantity and value of bacon, hams and gammons manufactured in each of the years 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937 and 1938, and the total quantity and value of such bacon, hams and gammons exported during each of these years; and if he will state what amount, if any, of the value of such exported goods represents subsidies, bounties, or other such payments.

The statistics of bacon, hams and gammons manufactured in each of the years 1933 to 1935 inclusive will be found on page 22 of the "Census of Industrial Production Report," 1932-1935 (P. No. 2604); those for 1936 on page 36 of the "Census of Industrial Production Report," 1936 (P. No. 3143), and those for 1937 on page 115 of the "Irish Trade Journal and Statistical Bulletin," June, 1938. The corresponding particulars for 1938 are not yet available, but the quantity is estimated at 1,125,000 cwt.

Statistics of bacon (including gammons) and hams exported in each of the years 1933 to 1937 are published in the annual "Trade and Shipping Statistics"; those for the years 1933 and 1934 on page 148 "Trade and Shipping Statistics," 1934 (P. No. 1807), and those for the years 1935 to 1937 on pages 181 and 182 of "Trade and Shipping Statistics," 1937 (P. No. 3121). The exports of bacon (including gammons) in the year 1938 were 545,834 cwt., value £2,206,474, and of hams were 11,100 cwt., value £51,029.

The question of the possible inclusion in the export values of any part of bounties or subsidies has been dealt with in the reply to the question relating to butter exports.
