Vol. 76 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Arithmetic in Primary Schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state whether he has been informed that the programme of work for primary schools in arithmetic contains rules which are not set out in some of the books approved by the Department of Education for use in primary schools; and, if so, if he has given consideration to this matter, and if he will state what steps he is taking to remedy the loss of time and study entailed by the want of co-ordination between the programme and the textbooks.

The list of textbooks in arithmetic approved for use in primary schools and the co-ordination between the matter contained in these textbooks and the programme in arithmetic for primary schools have been under consideration and investigation by my Department. In the case of one set of arithmetic textbooks the matter of which is not fully in accordance with my Department's programme, the publishers have been informed since March last that sanction will not be continued to this set of textbooks after the 30th June, 1940.
