Vol. 77 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Co. Limerick Gárda Stations.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has received a resolution of protest from the people of Ballyagran and district, County Limerick, against the proposed closing of Castletownconyers Gárda Síochána Station, and, if so, in view of these people's apprehensions, and their desire for the service and protection of local Guards, he will have these proposals withdrawn.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has received a resolution of protest from the people of Fedamore and district, County Limerick, against the proposed closing of Fedamore Gárda Síochána Station, and, if so, in view of the people's desire for the service and protection of local Guards, he will have these proposals withdrawn.

I shall take questions 11 and 12 together.

Representations have been received by me from local residents against the closing of Castletownconyers and Fedamore Gárda Síochána Stations.

So far no official proposal to dispense with Castletownconyers or Fedamore has come before me; if and when it does I shall weigh carefully the arguments for and against closing.

I take this opportunity, however, to say that in my opinion the time has come when a serious and continuous effort must be made to keep the cost of policing this country at the lowest level consistent with public safety and the carrying on of essential services.
