Vol. 77 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Barytes Lodes (West Cork).

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the altered world conditions, and the possibility of a successful re-opening of the barytes deposits at Ballydehob, Derreenalomane and Clonaslee, Co. Cork, he will have further examination of the deposits made, and steps taken to encourage the opening of the mines.

The barytes lodes in West Cork were examined and mapped by officers of the Geological Survey in the year 1919. A further examination is not likely to add anything material to our knowledge of their extent.

The development of the deposits is primarily a matter for private enterprise. I may say that my Department is prepared to assist such development in every way possible and all information available concerning the extent and accessibility of the lodes will be put at the disposal of any person interested.
