Vol. 78 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flour Prices in Co. Cavan.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that flour at the present time is costing people in County Cavan, forty-three shillings and sixpence (43/6) per sack and that people in County Fermanagh are purchasing it at twenty-three shillings and sixpence (23/6) per sack; and whether he will consider allowing free import or giving a subsidy so that flour may be bought in Cavan at a reduced price similar to that obtaining in the neighbouring county.

The figures quoted are not comparable in view of the different arrangements governing flour production here and in the United Kingdom. It is not the intention of the Government to subsidise flour prices in Eire under present circumstances. It is not proposed to license the import of flour.

Arising out of the Minister's answer, does he contend that there is no difference between the price of flour here and the price in Northern Ireland?

There is no difference?

I did not say that. There is a difference.

Is there no means of saving that difference for the people here?

We could subsidise the price of flour here, but we do not propose to do it.

Could you not issue a licence to import flour considering the amount of poverty in the country amongst small farmers and the number of unemployed?
