Vol. 78 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rationing of Petrol.

asked the Minister for Supplies whether he is aware of the serious effects on the motor trade and the resultant unemployment which has been caused by the rationing of petrol; and whether with a view to encouraging the purchase of motor cars and the registration of cars in the coming year he will consider the relaxation and, if possible, the cancellation of the regulations dealing with the petrol rationing.

I am aware that there is unemployment in the motor trade, but I am not satisfied that it is caused solely by the petrol rationing scheme.

My Department has constantly under review the whole position arising out of the restricted use of petrol and any relaxation possible will be afforded as circumstances permit. I am not prepared, however, to cancel the relevant order dealing with petrol rationing.
