Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Benefit.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (a) the total sum paid as (1) unemployment insurance benefit, and (2) unemployment assistance benefit during the year ended October 31st, 1939, and (b) the approximate number of men over the age of 60 unemployed at October 31st, 1939.

The total amount of unemployment benefit paid during the year ended 31st October, 1939, including repayments to associations in lieu of unemployment benefit amounting to £16,592, was £672,954. The total amount of unemployment assistance paid during the same year was £1,424,383. The figures are, of course, subject to audit. Exact particulars are not available of the number of unemployed men aged over 60. It is estimated that on 28th October, 1939, the number of men on the live register aged 60 or over was about 8,000.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total number of (1) men, (2) women, (3) boys, (4) girls, and (5) all such persons who were in receipt of (1) unemployment insurance payments, and (2) unemployment assistance payments during the week preceding 28th August, 1939, in each of the employment areas: (1) Dublin and Dun Laoghaire, (2) North Leinster, (3) South Leinster, (4) North Munster, (5) South Munster, (6) North Connacht, (7) South Connacht, (8) Ulster, and the gross total of such persons in receipt of these payments.

A statement giving the particulars which the Deputy requires will be circulated with the Official Report.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total amount of unemployment assistance payments made in the month of October, 1939, and the amount of such payments in respect of the Dublin registration area.

The total amount of unemployment assistance payments made in the month of October, 1939, was £110,568, and the amount of such payments in respect of the Dublin registration area was £35,011. The figures are, of course, subject to audit.
