Vol. 78 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment Figures.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state for each of the last three years for which the information is available, the average monthly employment given to (1) salaried employees, and (2) wage earners, (a) under 18 years, (b) 18 years and over, in the manufacture of (a) cotton, jute and convas goods, and (b) linen goods; and the annual yearly amount paid by way of (1) salaries, and (2) wages and earnings, for the manufacture of (a) cotton, jute and canvas goods, and (b) linen goods.

Particulars of employment and of salaries and wages paid are only available for the linen, cotton, jute and canvas industries combined. Many of the firms engaged in the production of linen goods are also engaged in the production of other textile goods and such firms are not required at the Census of Industrial Production to furnish separate particulars of employment or salaries and wages in respect of the different branches of the industry. Accordingly, it is not possible to give the information which the Deputy requires.
