Vol. 78 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Congestion in Mayo.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that acute congestion exists in the parish of Aughamore, Ballyhaunis, on the More O'Ferrall estate, and if he will now state what steps, if any, are being taken by the Land Commission to acquire the five grazing farms in Aughamore for the purpose of relieving the existing congestion.

Representations have been made to the Land Commission to acquire the lands in the parish of Aughamore for the relief of the tenants on the More O'Ferrall estate. The matter has been noted and will be considered as soon as circumstances permit.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will now state what steps, if any, are being taken by the Land Commission to provide the ten tenants on the Ward estate, in the townland of Kilscoghagh, Crossboyne, Claremorris, whose valuations are under £5 with economic holdings.

I have nothing to add at present to the reply given to the Deputy's previous question of 9th November last on this matter.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that acute congestion exists in the townland of Ranahard, Coilmore, Claremorris, where there are ten tenants whose poor law valuations are under £3 each; and if he will state what steps, if any, are being taken by the Land Commission to provide economic holdings for those tenants.

The townland of Coilmore on the Congested Districts Board (Ruttlege) estate includes a large number of rundale holdings which require rearrangement prior to resale to the tenants. A comprehensive scheme is in process for the survey and inspection of this and similar estates, but this is a difficult and tedious matter. The possibility of the relief of local congestion by migrating some of the tenants will be considered.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the holding of Mary Larkin, Lissitava, Hollymount, County Mayo, Congested Districts Board, Sligo estate, comprising an area of 7 acres, 0 roods, 20 perches, was sold by public auction for £185 in June, 1938; that the Land Commission refused to sanction sale and on November 4th, 1938, published a notice of intention to apply to the Appeals Tribunal for leave to resume the holding unless a petition against resumption was duly presented by the tenant; that no petition was presented by Miss Larkin; and, if he will now state the cause of delay in paying the tenant for her holding which has been derelict since 1938, and also the amount which the Land Commission has decided to pay for the holding.

The process of resumption in this case is taking its normal course. Negotiations with the tenant as to the amount of the compensation to be paid for the holding have just been completed and a consent has been obtained to have the amount of such compensation fixed at the sum of £185, subject to the approval of the Appeal Tribunal. The case will be concluded as soon as possible.
