Vol. 78 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cape Clear Telephone Connection.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state what progress is being made in the long promised scheme to connect Cape Clear with the mainland by telephone; and if he will make a special effort to complete the work soon, having regard to the greater necessity now arising through the increasing number of shipwrecked sailors sent adrift almost daily off the south-west coast of Cork.

As I informed the Deputy in reply to a previous question on the 19th October last, the provision of communication with Cape Clear Island has been hampered by the difficulty, in the present emergency, of procuring the requisite wireless apparatus. Recent enquiries, however, indicate improved prospects in this connection and, unless any unforeseen difficulty arises, it is now hoped that it may be feasible to provide wireless service before the end of the coming summer.
