Vol. 78 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin's Milk Supply.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state whether any steps are being taken to ensure a constant and full supply of high-grade and tubercular tested milk for the City of Dublin.

It is assumed that the milk referred to by the Deputy is the milk produced and sold under the designation "highest grade milk" and that the term "constant and full supply" is intended to mean a supply sufficient to meet the normal demand for such milk. I have no function or power to ensure that such a supply will be available for the City of Dublin, but I have no reason to think that the necessary supply is not available. The number of applications for licences for the production and sale of such milk in the Dublin district for the present year has already up to the present date practically reached the number of such licences granted up to the close of last year.

Will the Minister undertake to provide, in the Dublin district and in all other areas in the country, adequate supplies of effectively pasteurised milk where supplies of grade A milk are not available; and is he aware that, in several areas, milk powder is being furnished instead of milk because people are not able to get supplies of grade A milk?

I think that is a separate question.

Will the Minister undertake to supply effectively pasteurised milk where a constant and full supply of high-grade and tubercular-tested milk is not available for the City of Dublin?

I am not aware that a sufficient supply of highest grade milk to meet all possible demands is not available for the City of Dublin.

Will the Minister consider, in those other areas where such a supply is not, in fact, available, making available a supply of effectively pasteurised milk instead of milk powder?

I am prepared to examine any representations which may be made as to a shortage of highest grade milk in any area.
