Vol. 80 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Castlecomer Colliery Dispute.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that Castlecomer colliery as a result of a strike is now out of production for a considerable time, and if he will state what steps he has taken to effect a settlement of this dispute, and if in view of the anticipated shortage of coal supplies he will take the necessary measures to ensure that this coal mine is put into maximum production immediately.

I am aware that Castlecomer Collieries, Limited, Castlecomer, were out of production for a considerable time as a result of a strike for increased wages. I personally have had interviews with representatives of the proprietors and representatives of the trade union concerned and an officer of my Department presided at a joint conference between the parties at Castlecomer on the 14th instant. As a result of this joint conference a settlement has been effected and production was resumed on the 24th instant.
