Vol. 81 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Site for Borstal Institution.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he will acquire suitable premises with adequate land attached to accommodate the Borstal Institution at present located in the old Clonmel Jail, where occupational facilities for the youths detained there are deplorably inadequate.

I agree with the Deputy as to the deficiencies of the premises at Clonmel. They are now being handed over for the use of the Defence Forces during the present emergency and the Borstal staff and inmates are being transferred temporarily to Cork Prison, which is vacant at the moment.

Efforts are being made to secure more suitable permanent accommodation, but there are difficulties, as I am sure the Deputy appreciates, principally the rather heavy expenditure which would be involved in either building new premises or adapting existing premises for this purpose.
