Vol. 81 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Turf in Military Barracks.

asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been called to the large quantities of turf, for which there is no market, on the hands of small farmers and bog-holders in South Kerry, and to the fact that imported coal is largely used in military barracks and encampments throughout the country, and if he is prepared to take the necessary steps to have turf substituted for coal in the barracks, etc., under his jurisdiction.

The matter has not been brought specifically to my attention, but, if it had been, it would have been referred to the Commissioners of Public Works, who arrange contracts for fuel supplies for Army use.

Coal is, of necessity, used for cooking purposes in the Army, as turf would not be suitable for use in the cooking appliances available. For this reason, I am unable to accede to the Deputy's request to have turf entirely substituted for coal in military establishments. Every effort, however, has been, and is being made to utilise turf, wherever possible, for Army purposes.
