Vol. 81 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Letterkenny Employment Exchange.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether applications were invited recently for posts as temporary clerks in the local employment exchange at Letterkenny, and, if so, whether he will state the number of vacancies filled and the number of candidates interviewed; whether it was stipulated in the form of application that male candidates of military age would not be considered for the positions mentioned; whether he will state the number of males between 18 and 30 years of age who were in fact appointed and the number of those appointed who are unmarried; whether in fact one person appointed has a place of business in the town; whether he will state further, the number of unemployed married men with experience of clerical work who applied for these posts without success.

The answer to the first part of the Deputy's question is in the affirmative. Eighteen vacancies were filled—eight by the re-engagement of clerks who had previous experience at Letterkenny Employment Exchange and the remaining ten by new appointments. For the latter ten, 47 candidates were interviewed. Each male candidate of military age and unmarried was asked to state on his application form whether he had offered his services to the Defence Forces and whether, if his services had not been accepted, he was in a position to produce documentary evidence from the military authorities to that effect. Five of the eight clerks who (as already stated) were re-engaged on account of previous experience were between 18 and 30 years of age and unmarried. The only other male candidate who was appointed is over 30 years of age and is married.

I am not aware that any of the persons recently appointed has a place of business in the town of Letterkenny. Three applications were received from unemployed married men. Two of these had no experience of clerical work and their applications were unsuccessful; the third unemployed married man was appointed.
