Vol. 81 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fuel Importers, Limited.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will state the names and qualifications of the members of Coal Importers, Limited, the date of its formation, the authority under which it was formed, and its powers, functions, or terms of reference.

Fuel Importers (Éire) Limited is a limited liability company and full particulars in regard to the persons constituting the board, and the Memorandum and Articles of Association of the company can be obtained in the usual way in the Companies Registration Office.

The company was formed for the purpose of purchasing coal to be held in reserve to meet an extreme emergency situation.

The following are the present directors of the company:—J.P. Reihill, J.P. Meadows, V.A. Carroll, R.A. Morris, P.J. Collins, M.J. Murphy, G.I. Corbett, T.P. O'Connor, W.J. Grey, J. O'Keeffe. These directors receive no remuneration for their services.

Mr. Byrne

Will the Minister say whether this company have any power to stop the importation of slates and coal of a very low heating value, which is of no value at all to the consumers who have to buy it from them?

This company has no such function.

Mr. Byrne

Could the Minister not give them that function? Could he not authorise them to see that coal of a proper heating value was imported instead of the stuff that is now being sold?

I have explained before to this House and to the country as a whole that it is not in our power now to buy the type of coal we want. We have got to take whatever type of coal we can get.
