Vol. 83 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Damage Done by Bombing.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the proposals to introduce a Bill to compensate for damage done by bombing, it is intended, further, to introduce legislation amending the provisions of the Workmen's Compensation Act, 1934, so as to include pensions and detention allowances for the personnel of the mercantile marine affected.

Compensation is already being paid by the State in respect of death, injury and detention sustained by members of the crews of Irish registered ships as a result of belligerent action.

A Bill containing proposals for the necessary statutory provision will be introduced shortly.

Arising out of the Parliamentary Secretary's reply, will that Bill be introduced before the shipping Estimate? Does it not follow that the provision on which ships are to go to sea ought to receive a Vote for shipping?
