Vol. 84 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Installing Electricity in Labourers' Cottages.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will represent to the Electricity Supply Board the advisability of installing electricity in labourers' cottages and the homes of workers and poor people, in view of the shortage of paraffin oil, candles and coal.

The Electricity Supply Board,as a matter of normal policy, makes a supply of electricity available wherever it is possible on a reasonably economic basis. In view of the anticipated shortage of coal supplies in the near future, as well as the growing difficulty of obtaining supplies of materials, the board finds itself unable to arrange for new installaions and has to urge its existing consumers even to restrict their use of electricity. In these circumstances, anything like a general extension in the way the Deputy proposes would be impossible.

In view of the unfortunate position of tenants in labourers' cottages at present is there any possibility of the Minister negotiating with the Electricity Supply Board to supply electric lighting to these houses at reasonable rates?

As I explained to the Deputy already, the board by reason of the anticipated shortage concerning coal supplier and the great difficulty of obtaining other materials finds itself unable to provide even for the requirements of existing consumers.

I find it very hard to believe that statement, because I know that well-to-do people who can put down the money and guarantee £100 for current in the year, are getting an extension.

Rebuttal of a Minister's reply is not a supplementary question.

The Deputy knows more than the Minister.

I am always subject to order.
