Vol. 84 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Removal of Turf.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the Clontarf Parish Council has been informed that it will not get a licence for the movement of turf into Dublin; if, in view of the fact that their committee had arranged for the purchase and delivery of 1,000 tons for people who had made no other arrangements to take in any stocks of fuel for the winter months, he will request the Controller to give facilities for the purchase and removal of this supply.

All applications for such licences with full particulars of the circumstances should be made in writing and addressed to— The Office of the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance, Turf Division, 21, Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin, where they will receive full attention on their merits.

Mr. Byrne

Is it correct to say that the Parish Council of Clontarf have already been informed that they cannot secure a licence; if further application is made will the licence be issued?

All applications for such licences, with full particulars of the circumstances, should be made in writing and this application has not yet been made in writing.

Mr. Byrne

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the parish council has been informed at his Department that the licence cannot be issued? Can he hold out any hope that, if further application is made in writing, the licence will be granted and the restrictions on the removal of turf to Dublin withdrawn?

When the application is received in writing, it will be given full consideration on its merits.

Mr. Byrne

In spite of the fact that there is a restriction on the removal of turf to Dublin?

On its merits.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary be good enough to say whether any licence will be granted to any person in the Dublin area to bring turf, in any circumstances, from a turf producing area into the city of Dublin at present?

It can be done.

Will it be done?

It will be done if national necessities require it.

In considering this matter, will the Parliamentary Secretary remember that national necessities require that some of the turf be taken from the turf-producing districts, so that the people there can cut more turf? They are being prevented from cutting additional turf by the accumulation of turf there.
