Vol. 84 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Forestry Workers' Wages.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is prepared to increase substantially the present inadequate wages of forestry workers, and, if so, whether the higher rates of pay will be made operative in the near future; further, whether in view of the fact that forestry workers usually are employed at considerable distances from their homes and that for the most part they are engaged in cutting timber for fuel he is prepared to secure for them a supply of tea.

Forestry labourers are paid the weekly rates fixed for each locality under the Agricultural Wages Act, 1936, and it is not proposed to increase those rates.

With regard to the second part of the Deputy's question the possibility of arranging for the supply of an additional allowance of tea to forestry labourers is already receiving attention.
