Vol. 84 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment in Bere Island.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state (1) the total number of civilians employed in Bere Island on the taking over of the defences there; (2) how many were employed as at 30th June, 1941; (3) how many of these were employed through the labour exchange, and (4) how many were employed directly, without reference to the labour exchange.

I have no information as to the number of civilians employed in Bere Island by the British authorities on the handing over of the defences there. The number of civilians employed by my Department in Bere Island as on the 30th June, 1941, was 17. Of this number, two were employed through the employment exchange, two were taken over from the British authorities and 13 were employed without reference to the employment exchange.

Is it not a fact that the Minister gave an understanding that, in future, all recruitment of civilian labour on the island will be through the labour exchange?

That undertaking has already been given.

That undertaking was given?

And that is being done?
