Vol. 84 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Paper-making and Other Materials.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will state the quantity of (a) paper-making materials, and (b) woollen and cotton rags and textile waste exported during each of the months January to July inclusive; further, whether he will say if there is any objection taken to the export of those commodities, and, if so, how it is exercised.

As regards the first part of the question, the Deputy is probably aware that subsequent to August, 1939, a summary only of the value of imports and exports has been published, and that on grounds of public policy, details other than those given in that summary are not published. As regards the second part of the question, the export of the articles referred to is prohibited, except under licence, under the provisions of the Emergency Powers (Control of Export) Order, 1940, and licences are granted only when my Department is satisfied that the commodities in question are not required to meet home demands. In practice export licences are at present being granted only in respect of woollen rags.
