Vol. 84 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Rabbits.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether it is proposed to prevent the export of rabbits, pigs' heads, sausages and other descriptions of meat and meat products which are normally obtainable at a moderate expenditure by poor people whose incomes do not enable them to buy or consume the expensive descriptions of meat.

It is not proposed to prevent the export of rabbits as the supply available is far in excess of the home demand, and the reduction of the number of rabbits in the country is essential to preserve valuable food crops from their ravages.

Exports of pigs' heads are at present negligible. The supply is, however, short owing to the reduction in pig stocks and the consequent decline in the number of pigs killed.

The export of sausages of the ordinary type containing wheaten products is prohibited, and no export licences are being issued.

Any meat and meat products exported at present represent only a small proportion of the quantity of meat of all kinds available, and are mainly of the more expensive classes.
