Fé mar fógruíodh ar eagrán an deichmheadh lá den mhí seo den Iris Oifigiúil, tá Gearóid O Cuanacháin ceaptha chun bheith ina Chárathóir Chontae i nGaillimh.

Cad is brí den fhocal "dóthain" sa bhfreagra?

Isé an bhrí atá leis go bhfuil eolas maith ar an nGaedhilg ag an gClárathóir seo.

An bhfuil fhios ag an Aire cad is brí den fhocal sin i gContae na Gaillimhe?

Tá go leór Gaedhilge ag an bhfear seo chun dualgais na hoifige a dhéanamb tríd an nGaedhilg.

What steps were taken to ascertain what knowledge of Irish this person had?

Mr. Boland

Two members of the Civil Service, one of whom was a member of my Department and is a native Irish speaker, and another high official who has a competent knowledge of Irish, examined this man as to his competency in Irish, and while agreeing that while he had not what could be described as a competent knowledge, they were satisfied he had an adequate knowledge to discharge the duties of this office.

Is the Minister aware that, while practising in court, he had the evidence of the Guards translated on the plea that he did not understand the language?

Mr. Boland

I am not aware of that, but we have documentary evidence to show that on two occasions he acted for a person in Irish. I have not investigated the truth or otherwise of that but that is the information supplied to me. In addition, we had an examination held. Apart from that, this man was outstanding because he was first in his examination and won a gold medal.

Is the Minister aware that there was a graduate of the National University who had equal honours and who is well known to have a practical knowledge of Irish and that it is generally known in Galway that the person appointed does not know Irish?
