Vol. 85 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport of Turf.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state the number of Army lorries which have been made available during the present year for the transportation of turf to (a) Dublin, and (b) other centres; the quantity of turf transported to date by such lorries and the running cost per ton-mile of transportation by such lorries.

Other than in cases where turf was required for Army purposes, Army lorries have not been made available to date for the transportation of such fuel. The latter part of the question does not, therefore, arise. One hundred lorries will be engaged on the national scheme within the next fortnight. A considerable number will commence operations on 3rd proximo. The remainder will be employed as fast as the contractors can produce creels.
