Vol. 85 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplies of Salt.

asked the Minister for Supplies whether he is aware that in the Castletownbere district people requiring salt are unable to get supplies; whether he is aware that as well as salt for fish, salt will be required for beef and pork coming up to Christmas, and whether he will state what steps he proposes to take to make salt available in the area.

I am not aware that people requiring salt in the Castletownbere district are unable to get supplies. Apart from salt required for fish-curing purposes, in connection with which I would refer the Deputy to my reply to his question on the 29th October, I have had no complaints of difficulty in obtaining salt in this district. I am aware that, as well as salt for fish, salt will be required for beef and pork before Christmas. Salt supplies are now being made available to traders in this district by salt importers at the rate of 75 per cent. of deliveries in 1940. I have no reason to believe that any greater quantity of beef and pork will require to be salted in the Castletownbere district this year than was salted last year. With economy in use, supplies at the rate of 75 per cent. should be sufficient for such purposes, and I see no reason to take special action which would have the result of putting this district in a more favoured position than other districts as regards supplies for the salting of beef and pork.

That special action is very satisfactory. I am glad to see you have taken special action. You are now giving them supplies of salt at the rate of 75 per cent. of last year's deliveries, and that is satisfactory.
