Vol. 85 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of Timber for County Mayo Church.

asked the Minister for Supplies whether he is aware that James Glynn, building contractor, of Ballina, County Mayo, who had made arrangements for supplies of timber to complete the erection of a church at Bunacurry, Achill, County Mayo, has been refused a permit to purchase this timber, and that the refusal has resulted in the disemployment of eleven married men, and whether he will state the reason for the refusal of this permit.

An application for a permit under the Emergency Powers (Control of Timber) Order, 1941, to purchase timber required for the erection of a new church at Bunacurry, Achill, County Mayo, has been refused. I am not aware that the refusal has resulted in the disemployment of eleven married men. The application was refused owing to the acute shortage of the types of building timber proposed to be used. It was suggested by my Department that other timber of which there are reasonable supplies available might be substituted, in which event a more favourable view of the application would be taken, but the suggestion was not adopted.
