Vol. 85 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Uneconomic Holdings in Meath.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware of the dissatisfaction obtaining among a large number of migrants to Meath because the holdings on which they were placed were not economic; that many of those men are anxious to return to their former homes, where their economic position was far more secure, and if he will see that in future before actual migration is effected the farms which are allocated to them are economic in each case.

I do not admit the Deputy's contention. So far as I am aware, the migrants in Meath generally are doing well on their new holdings, though, of course, in view of the general desire for expansion some of them may desire more land. The size of the holdings which the Land Commission can provide must, of course, have relation to the area of untenanted land available for division and, so far as migrants to County Meath are concerned, it has been found to vary from say 22 acres to 34 acres.
