Vol. 85 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Gas-Producer Plants—Anthracite Supply.

asked the Minister for Supplies whether he will consider granting a quota of anthracite coal to persons who have lorries equipped with gas-producer plants so as to keep this transport in operation and these drivers employed.

Permits are granted to owners of motor vehicles equipped with gas-producer plants authorising them to purchase their full requirements of anthracite monthly. All these permits are returnable to my Department and there is no evidence that the holders have been unable to obtain their supplies. I see no reason, therefore, for adopting the suggestion in the question which in my opinion would be impracticable.

Would the Minister be prepared to say whether, in the existing situation, he approves of the equipment of lorries with these plants? Does the anthracite position look as if we will be able to keep them on the road?

The Deputy had better put a separate question on that.
