Vol. 85 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increased Electricity Charges.

asked the Minister for Supplies whether he is aware of the widespread dissatisfaction caused by the announcement made by the Electricity Supply Board of increased charges for electricity, and whether in the public interest, he proposes to make representations to the board against the proposed increases.

I am aware that the announcement referred to has been the cause of dissatisfaction. Before bringing the increases into effect the Electricity Supply Board consulted my Department in the matter and the increased costs on which the board based their proposals for increased charges were fully investigated. Having considered all the facts, I am satisfied that the increased charges are justified.

Would the Minister say what increased costs justified the increased charge?

Mainly the increased cost of coal.
