Vol. 85 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Fire Prevention Equipment.

asked the Minister for the Co-ordination of Defensive Measures if he is aware that stirrup-hand pumps, Redhill-containers and steel protective helmets are still being offered for sale at 30/-, 27/6 and 17/6 respectively, prices which especially having regard to the uselessness of these articles for any other purpose are not inducive to their being purchased in sufficient numbers for adequate local fire prevention; and if, by means of a subsidy or otherwise, he will take steps to ensure that these and other articles vital to fire prevention will be available to the public at reasonable prices.

I am aware that these are the approximate prices at which this type of fire-fighting equipment is being sold at present. I do not propose to take any steps such as the Deputy indicates. A very considerable quantity of all types of fire-fighting equipment has already been provided, and it is felt that further expenditure of public funds for this purpose would not be warranted.

Mr. Byrne

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that under the official scheme every fireworker is expected to have a helmet?

Mr. Byrne

Is he aware that these helmets cost only 5/6 in Great Britain?
