Vol. 85 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Survey of Ships.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the services of the surveyors attached to his Department, Marine Branch, were utilised in connection with the surveys of any of the ships purchased by Irish Shipping, Limited, and, if so, will he place before the Dáil a report as to such surveys.

The services of the marine surveyors attached to my Department were utilised in respect of those of the ships purchased by Irish Shipping, Limited, which were required under the Merchant Shipping Acts to be surveyed for registration in this country, or which, after repairs and overhaul, required to be surveyed regarding seaworthiness and the suitability of the accommodation provided for the crews. These are ordinary routine surveys carried out in respect of any Irish ships in similar circumstances, and I do not consider that any useful purpose would be served by placing before the Dáil the reports of such surveys.
