Vol. 85 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wages of Kildare Workers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that county council workers in Kildare are being paid at the low rate of 30/- per week (less insurance deductions), and, whether, having regard to the willingness of the county council to grant an increase in wages to their employees and of the insufficiency of their present wages to cope with the high cost of commodities, he is prepared to revoke Emergency Powers (No. 83) Order so as to enable such workers to secure an increase in their present low rate of wages.

I am aware that county council workers in Kildare are being paid at the rate of 30/- per week. I am advised that Emergency Powers (No. 83) Order, 1941, does not apply to these workers.

On what grounds does it not apply?

It does not apply.

Would the Minister say why the Government decided to prevent them getting the increase of wages granted by Kildare County Council?

That is a separate question.

Is the Minister aware that his colleague, the Minister for Local Government, refused to sanction such increase?

The Deputy asked a question and I informed him that Emergency Powers (No. 83) Order does not apply to these workers.

Whether it does or not, they are not to get the increase?
