Vol. 85 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Workmen's Compensation.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the fact that the premiums payable on policies taken out for the purposes of the Workmen's Compensation Act are based on the amount of the wages paid in each case, he will consider the equity of increasing the amount of the compensation payable under the Act, pro rata, with the increase in wages during recent years.

I am informed that the premiums payable on insurance policies against risks under the Workmen's Compensation Act, 1934, are based by the insurance companies upon the annual wages bill of the particular employer and not on the wages paid to individuals. It is not at present proposed to introduce legislation to provide for increases in the amounts of compensation payable under the 1934 Act.

Is the Minister aware that this country, with India and Italy, are the three worst in the world as regards workers' compensation?

I think the very reverse is the case.
