Vol. 85 No. 14

Committee on Finance. - Vote 79—Repayments to Contingency Fund.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim ná raghaidh thar £1,106 chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh Márta, 1942, chun Roimhíocanna Ilghnéitheacha áirithe d'aisíoc leis an gCiste Teagmhais.

That a sum not exceeding £1,106 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending 31st March, 1942, to repay to the Contingency Fund certain Miscellaneous Advances.

The Estimate for this service, as Deputies know, is taken towards the end of the financial year, and is needed to recoup to the Contingency Fund any moneys issued from it since it was last replenished, other than advances for services covered by and repayable out of other Votes. The items of expenditure which have necessitated the present Estimate are: (1) stamp duty remitted on deeds and other instruments for public departments, £738 4s. 3d.; (2) recoupment to Dublin Corporation of cost of fire brigade services rendered in Belfast following air raids, £355 8s. 2d.; and (3) triplets bounty, £12.

I should like to ask the Minister if the State is bearing the whole of the cost of the assistance given by the Dublin Corporation in connection with the fires in Belfast.

Yes, but the only claim so far received has been that in respect of the Dublin Fire Brigade. Further claims are expected from Dun Laoghaire, Drogheda and Dundalk. We have not got them yet, but they will be met in the same way when they come in.

I am not asking that the Minister should claim repayment, but I should like to know whether, in fact, any offer of recoupment was made in the case of either of these services.

I did not hear that there was any offer of recoupment made.

Does the Minister expect an offer to be made?

The Germans may repay it.

Vote put and agreed to.
