Vol. 85 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flour Quota in Kerry.

Mr. Lynch

asked the Minister for Supplies whether he is aware that in normal times the people in South Kerry largely used "mixed bread," that is, bread made of a mixture of flour and maize meal in the proportion of about half and half, and that nowadays since maize meal is not to be got, a greater quantity of flour is required for human food in that area than was required in normal times; and, if so, whether he will permanently fix the quota of flour for this area on the basis of a 25 per cent. increase on the general quota.

Representations were made to me that it was the practice in parts of Kerry to use a proportion of maize meal in the home baking of bread and extra supplies of flour have been released from time to time for those areas. In all measures relating to the control of flour distribution this position will be kept in mind, but I am not prepared to give a general undertaking of the nature suggested in the question.
