Vol. 85 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Commission Workers' Wages.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware of the great hardship and poverty which exist in the families of Land Commission workers by reason of the inadequacy of the wages paid, and whether, in view of the increased cost of living and of the fact that owing to the inclemency of the weather very few workers draw a week's wages, he will take steps to see that an adequate wage is paid, and thus save our workers from being forced to emigrate.

The rate of wages paid to labourers employed by the Land Commission on estate improvement work is conditioned by various circumstances and relations. The general position of the wages of agricultural workers is at the moment under review, and, as the Deputy will appreciate, the question of the conditions of employment on Land Commission works must be related to the requirements of the farming community.
