Vol. 85 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of County Mayo Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that acute congestion exists in the townlands of Ballyglass, Clooneara, Rageralish, Icelaun, and Creenane, Kilmovee, County Mayo, where there are over 20 tenants whose poor law valuations are under £5 each; if he will now state what steps, if any, are being taken by the Land Commission to acquire the lands known as Brooklawn Farm, Record No. U4688, and if he will state the area of arable land contained in that farm, and the area of arable land cultivated on said farm in 1941.

The Land Commission are aware of the congestion which exists in the district referred to by the Deputy and they have instituted proceedings for the acquisition of the lands of Icelaun, owned by John Gallagher. The owner objected to acquisition. The objection was heard by the lay commissioners, who have reserved their decision.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that acute congestion exists in the townland of Togher and vicinity where there are 21 tenants whose poor law valuations are under £7 each; that the Robeen Parish Council have forwarded petitions to the Minister for Lands and the Land Commission, requesting that the farm known as the Algie estate, in the townland of Togher, which contains 250 acres, be acquired to relieve congestion, and if he will now state what steps, if any, are being taken by the Land Commission to acquire that farm and have one-fourth of the arable land on said farm put under tillage.

The Land Commission have received representations from the Robeen Parish Council requesting the acquisition of the lands of Togher, on the estate of Allan J. Algie, County Mayo, but owing to the emergency conditions now obtaining, they are not prepared to take any action in the matter.
