Vol. 86 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Salmon.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state whether an undertaking was given to the Drogheda Board of Fishery Conservators that the price of salmon would not be fixed without their being consulted; and, if so, if he will state why the board was not given representation on the committee which fixed the price of salmon.

There must be some misunderstanding about this matter, as no such undertaking was or could be given to the Drogheda Conservators. So far as our salmon exports to Britain are concerned, the sole purchaser is now the Ministry of Food, London, by whom a fixed price is being paid. Any suggestion by the Drogheda Conservators as to how our salmon might be disposed of to better advantage would be welcomed. The price in question was not fixed by any committee here.

Does the Minister realise that the fishery men at Drogheda are definitely convinced that he has broken his word with them? Will he inquire into the matter and see what is wrong?

I could not have broken my word, seeing that the Deputy's question is the first I have heard of the matter.
