Vol. 86 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pressed Beef Exports.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that as a result of the cessation of exports of pressed beef, 60 workers were thrown out of employment in Tralee; and whether he is now in a position to state what arrangements, if any, have been made to permit a resumption of pressed beef exports.

I am aware that unemployment has resulted at a number of centres, including Tralee, as a result of the cessation of exports of pressed beef. I see no immediate prospect of making such arrangements as would permit the resumption of this trade.

Could the Minister say whether any negotiations are in progress with the British Government with a view to resuming this trade?

There have been, up to recently, but I am afraid the prospect is bad.

Are the negotiations concluded, or have they broken down?

More or less. They are suspended.
